Newcastle United strike January deal with ‘excellent’ player – another one could follow

Newcastle United signed a “excellent” player in January; there may be more to come.

Fabian Schar, a defender for Newcastle United, has extended his contract at St James’ Park.

It has been agreed that Fabian Schar would stay with Newcastle United through the summer of 2025.

Schar’s 2022 contract was set to expire at the end of the current campaign, but the Magpies have confirmed that the Switzerland international has decided to stay longer.

After spending a whopping £3 million to transfer from Deportivo La Coruna to St James’ Park in 2018, the 32-year-old has made 169 appearances and scored 11 goals.
“I’ve said it a lot of times, but I feel really at home here,” Schar remarked. Living in Newcastle makes me feel so at ease; I adore the city and enjoy representing the team in front of the amazing supporters. I have no words to express how much I adore them and value their support.

“Playing for this team where I feel so comfortable with all my team-mates and with the coaching staff feels really like a family for me, so I’m really grateful to stay here a bit longer and hopefully to have some more exciting times.”

Since Eddie Howe took over as head coach of Newcastle in November 2021 after Steve Bruce, no player has appeared in more games for the team.

Schar was certain to go before Howe was appointed, but after scoring the fourth goal in the club’s historic 4-1 Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain in October, he has undoubtedly established himself as an icon.

For us, Fabian has been fantastic,” Howe continued. He has been a huge contributor to our success and a role model of consistency ever since I joined the football team.

“He’s defended very well but he’s hugely talented with the ball as well, so we’re delighted that he’s extended his time here.”
