Saints keeping an eye on the Villa top man..

Not much occurs in the January transfer market until the last few days, but that doesn’t stop rumors from spreading quickly, and the most recent ones regarding Saints are coming from one of the more trustworthy sources.

It’s well knowledge that Fabrizio Romano is one of the football journalists with the most pulse on the scene, so when footballfancast.com reports that Romano is speculating about possible targets at Southampton, you should pay attention.

The first rumor is brand-new: 20-year-old Lamare Bogarde, a defender for Aston Villa who joined the team from Feyenoord in September 2020, is mostly a center midfielder but can also play as a central defender. Bogarde has represented the Netherlands U20 team.

Though he isn’t as versatile as Mason Holgate and hasn’t played much fullback to far, you can see why he is being connected. Holgate might be replaced by him should he leave during this transfer window.

Bogarde is reportedly Southampton’s top loan target, but I fail to see why we would sign him for a short term loan. Maybe we would like him permanently because of his potential, but considering Russell Martin has stated that he will prioritize experience over youth in his pursuit of promotion, it is difficult to see the benefit of signing him given his scant playing time thus far.

He has only featured in one first-team match for Villa, which was an FA Cup tie on this day in 2021 that saw Villa lose 4-1 at Liverpool.

He returned to the team this season, but his playing time has been divided between starting and the bench. In the last two months, he has only made one appearance, a 26-minute substitute stint. He played the second half of last season on loan at Bristol Rovers, where he was a regular starter.

Villa has decided to repatriate Bogarde as a result, and they want to loan him out once more.

I find it difficult to think that we would be interested in this one because we are looking for experience and Villa is looking for development. I have a suspicion that his agency is putting this one out there to pique interest.

Romano’s second assertion is that we take Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho extremely seriously. As we’ve already mentioned, Carvalho was returned from his loan at RB Leipzig, where the German team was eager to keep him. However, Liverpool felt he wasn’t playing enough.

“In the coming days, Liverpool will choose which loan option is ideal for Fábio Carvalho. Leeds, Southampton, and Hull City are all vying for his signature; Wolves has also expressed interest in Fabio, but game time assurances are crucial.”

Carvalho has experience playing in the Championship; in the 20/21 campaign, he scored his first goal at St Mary’s as a consolation in a 3-1 victory that sent Fulham into relegation. This was his first season on the field. Ironically, Nathan Tella scored Southampton’s first goal in this match as well.

He made 36 appearances for Fulham the next season as they made their way back to the Premier League, tallying 10 goals and 8 assists.

Because of this, Liverpool signed him to a five-year contract. Jurgen Klopp is still an admirer of the player, but Liverpool believes he needs regular playing time to gain the experience necessary to compete for a spot in the team.

In an effort to increase his offensive options, Russell Martin may find some traction with this.
