An NFL insider reveals a possible timeline for Belichick’s decision.

Albert Breer joins Arbella Early Edition with Trenni and Phil Perry to predict what the headline will be following the Patriots’ final game of the season against the Jets on Monday morning.

The New England Patriots will play the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium on Sunday to conclude their 2023 NFL season. While the game’s outcome is critical to where the Patriots choose in the 2024 NFL Draft, the bigger drama may be what happens in the days following.

Will Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots part ways? Will the lack of postseason football in three of the last four years be enough for Patriots owner Robert Kraft to make a head coach change after 24 years and six Super Bowl championships?

When might the Patriots make a change if they decide to do so?

“I believe the outcome of the game is unimportant to the people who live here. “I think what happens next week is important,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer said Thursday on NBC Sports Boston’s Arbella Early Edition. “I’m guessing this isn’t going to be one of those firings that happens by press release on Sunday night.” I believe there will be a little more to it. I believe Robert Kraft has made up his mind about what he wants to do. But he’ll go through the motions and make it appear as if he had to think about it on Monday. So I believe there will be at least a slight delay.”

How much of a delay is there?

Breer stated he “wouldn’t be surprised” if a decision was made on Monday, then went on to explain why making a choice sooner rather than later would be the best option for the Patriots.

“You’re really screwing your franchise if you don’t move with some expedience,” he said. “Sometimes there are good reasons to wait, but if there aren’t good reasons to wait, you’re doing it just to appear thoughtful, and that’s pointless.”

“You have to get started, go through the process of hiring a new head coach, even if it is Jerod Mayo.” According to league rules, you must go through a process. Then you have to figure out what to do with the front office, because those folks will be required to attend the Senior Bowl in three weeks. The franchise faces a significant offseason ahead, which whoever is in charge will have to dive into, and it’s critical to get things rolling.”

The upcoming offseason could be the most important in the team’s history. For the first time in almost thirty years, they will have a top-five pick as well as a large amount of salary cap flexibility in free agency. Being well-prepared for these vital windows on the league calendar is critical for the Patriots, which is why making changes to the coaching staff and front office as soon as possible is the best course of action.
