Jewison Bennette is eager to leave Sunderland on loan in January due to problems off the pitch.

The winger arrived at Sunderland from Costa Rican club Herediano last summer, arriving for a reported £1.07 million on a four-year deal.

Jewison Bennette went onto make his debut the following month, before scoring his first goal for the club in the 87th minute to secure a point against Watford.

The 19-year-old made a total of 15 appearances last season and looked to be a very exciting prospect, though things haven’t gone to plan this term.

Bennette has played only nine minutes of senior football this season, in which he picked up a brilliant assist for Chris Rigg’s first league goal in the 5-0 win over Southampton in September.

However, Bennette hasn’t even been named on the bench for Sunderland since the 4-0 defeat to Middlesbrough, while he has mainly featured for the U21 side, when not out injured.

Tony Mowbray previously claimed that it was Bennette’s choice to be left out of the first team, as he would prefer to be playing football than spending all his time on the bench. However, things looked to have soured since.

According to Costa Rican journalist Kevin Jimenez, the teenager has fallen out with the board and is now pushing for a loan move away next month.

Writing on X, Jimenez said: “Jewison Bennette is not playing for Sunderland due to differences on the part of the board. According to sources, the player believes that he is not being treated with respect. The player would go out on loan in January.”

Should we send Jewison Bennette out on loan?
Jewison Bennette has definitely shown glimmers of potential in his year on Wearside, but he was far from the standard required in his first season. Though that was definitely to be expected, given that he had just moved over from South America.

We haven’t had the chance to see any sign of improvement this term, though I think many fans would say a loan move was best for him – even if he hadn’t had these ‘differences’ with the club.

Sunderland are lacking in back-up options to Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts, but Bennette is yet to reach the level in which he can impress in the Championship. A loan switch to a League One club could definitely benefit the youngster, as playing U21 football is only going to take him so far.
