Breaking News: Cubs Eye Trade for Twins’ $73.5 Million Ace Following Justin Steele Injury
The Chicago Cubs are actively seeking a pitcher after losing their ace, Justin Steele, for the rest of the season due to an elbow injury. This setback has weakened their rotation early in the 2025 season, but the Cubs are determined to stay in the hunt for a World Series. With a 14-9 record, they currently lead the National League Central.
To bolster their pitching staff, the Cubs are reportedly interested in trading for Minnesota Twins ace Pablo Lopez. The Twins, who are struggling with a 7-14 record, may be motivated to part with Lopez in order to cut costs, especially amid ownership uncertainties.
In return, the Cubs are expected to offer prospects Kevin Alcantara (No. 6 in their system, No. 86 in MLB), James Triantos (No. 5, No. 69 in MLB), and Jack Neely (No. 16).
Lopez, a former All-Star, has been one of the top pitchers in baseball, posting a sub-4.00 ERA in four of the past five seasons. While he’s currently on the 15-day Injured List due to a hamstring strain, he was performing well before the injury and has already begun his rehab process with a start in the minors.
Without Steele, the Cubs’ rotation now consists of Jameson Taillon, Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, and Ben Brown. If they hope to remain competitive and secure a playoff spot, adding another strong pitcher like Lopez is essential.
With the NL Central being one of the weaker divisions, this is an ideal time for the Cubs to accumulate wins, making a trade for Lopez sooner rather than later a smart move for the team.
