Breaking Done Deal: NY Giants Officially Agree A New Deal To Blockbuster Trade

The New York Giants have made bold moves in the draft in recent years, but they now face the harsh reality that many of those selections have not panned out as expected. As general manager Joe Schoen gears up for his third NFL Draft, the first draft class he oversaw is particularly under intense scrutiny, and the consequences may be felt sooner rather than later.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, three recent Giants draft picks—Kayvon Thibodeaux, Evan Neal, and Jalin Hyatt—are all considered potentially expendable heading into the 2025 NFL Draft. Whether due to poor performance, injuries, or lack of fit within the scheme, New York may be ready to move on from players who were once seen as foundational pieces.

Kayvon Thibodeaux: From Defensive Star to Depth Option?
Selected fifth overall in 2022, Thibodeaux was expected to be the pass-rusher the Giants had been missing. However, after three seasons, his performance has been more inconsistent than dominant.

In 2024, Thibodeaux recorded 38 pressures and six sacks over 593 snaps, but his troubling 27.6% missed tackle rate raised concerns—especially for a player who was expected to be a constant presence on the edge. His production hasn’t matched his draft pedigree, and injuries have also hindered his progress.

With Abdul Carter of Penn State gaining traction as a potential pick for the Giants at No. 3 overall, Thibodeaux’s starting role could be in jeopardy. If Carter is added to the defensive line, it’s possible Thibodeaux could see a reduction in playing time or even become a trade candidate.

Evan Neal’s Last Shot at a Position Change
Neal, the second of the Giants’ top-10 picks in 2022, was drafted to secure the right tackle spot. Instead, he’s been inconsistent and has struggled to solidify the position.

Giants' Joe Schoen knows extensive offensive line rebuild is necessary

Last season, Neal played just 459 snaps, allowing 17 pressures and two sacks. Although he’s been decent as a run blocker, his pass protection has been problematic. Reports suggest the Giants are considering moving him inside to guard, a position he has yet to play in the NFL, which would come with its own set of challenges.

With an increasing injury history, Neal now faces a critical point in his career. A failed transition to guard could mark the end of his tenure in New York.
