While Ryan Browne’s decision to head back to Purdue may have initially signaled that UNC was satisfied with its current quarterback room, the latest news out of Chapel Hill tells a different story.
Though there was always a chance the Tar Heels would make a minor addition, few expected the development that broke on Sunday.
North Carolina is now set to host one of the top names in the transfer portal — Georgia quarterback Jaden Rashada — for a visit this Wednesday, according to Chris Hummer and John Talty of CBS Sports.
Rashada, currently ranked as the No. 1 available QB in the 247Sports Transfer Portal rankings, brings a high ceiling and a big name. A former top-50 recruit in the Class of 2023 from Pittsburg, California, Rashada began his collegiate career at Arizona State. There, he flashed real promise in limited action, passing for 485 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman.
After transferring to Georgia, Rashada saw no game action during the 2024 season and is now on the move again, seeking a fresh start and possibly a clearer path to a starting role.
His visit to Chapel Hill adds an intriguing twist to a quarterback room that was thought to be largely settled following the addition of Gio Lopez. True freshman Bryce Baker and veteran Max Johnson — recovering from a season-ending injury — are also expected to compete for the starting job.
However, with new head coach Bill Belichick at the helm, it’s clear the Tar Heels are leaving no stone unturned in building the strongest roster possible. If Rashada does choose UNC, it would add even more intrigue to an already competitive quarterback battle heading into the 2025 season.
