The Duke Blue Devils’ season ended in agony after dominating their way to the Final Four, only to blow a double-digit lead in the second half against the Houston Cougars, ultimately losing in the semifinals in stunning fashion. This loss capped Duke’s national championship hopes and what many believe could be the short collegiate careers of freshman sensation Cooper Flagg, along with his teammates Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach.
However, in a moment when he could’ve declared for the NBA draft during a late-night interview with SportsCenter on Friday, Flagg made a surprising statement that kept the possibility of a return to Duke alive, even though it remains unlikely. His comments followed a strong reflection on the culture and “brotherhood” he felt the moment he stepped onto Duke’s campus.
“The brotherhood is just the trust and connection that comes with knowing there are other guys who have walked the same path before you,” Flagg said.
“You have the resources and the ability to do what they did. Just having that trust, knowing you’re not the first to do it, and if you ever need help, there are alums who’ve reached out and made me aware they’re there for me if I ever need anything.”
