UVA Basketball Secures Commitment from VCU Transfer Martin Carrere

After adding three transfer guards, the Virginia Cavaliers have secured a commitment from VCU redshirt freshman Martin Carrere. The 6-foot-8, 180-pound forward from France, who sat out his first season under coach Ryan Odom in Richmond, becomes the first VCU player to follow Odom to Charlottesville. He joins guards Duke Miles (Oklahoma), Jacari White (North Dakota State), and Sam Lewis (Toledo) as recent portal commitments to the Wahoos.

Carrere, originally from Pontonx-sur-l’Adour, France, has experience with the French U-18 team, having played in the 2024 U-18 FIBA EuroBasket tournament. He averaged 6.7 points per game while shooting 41.9% from three-point range. Additionally, he competed for Limoges CSP Elite U-21 in France’s U-21 league, where he averaged 8.6 points per game and hit 38.8% of his three-pointers.

Carrere is expected to play as a stretch four for Coach Odom’s system, though it will likely take him a year or two to earn significant playing time. While Odom typically utilizes a deep rotation, Carrere might see some minutes during his redshirt freshman year. The Cavaliers are also looking to add more frontcourt players to the roster before the portal season concludes.

In other news, Elijah Saunders, a potential familiar face, is still considering Virginia among five schools, including Texas Tech, Kansas State, Purdue, and Grand Canyon. If Saunders returns to UVA, he would be the first player to rejoin the Cavaliers after entering the portal, alongside Elijah Gertrude as one of the only returning scholarship players for next season.
