Confirmed: Vikings Secure Former Super Bowl MVP to Replace J.J. McCarthy in Major Trade

The Minnesota Vikings likely won’t need a veteran quarterback to start the majority of their 2025 regular season games, but they could certainly benefit from having a seasoned signal-caller available for high-pressure situations.

Second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is expected to take the starting role in Minnesota, though he will have to prove his readiness during training camp after missing his entire rookie season due to injury. With Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones leaving in free agency, the Vikings are still on the lookout for a reliable backup. A veteran quarterback with experience seems to be a better fit for the team’s needs than taking a chance on a Day 3 draft pick.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report suggested on April 5 that Joe Flacco is the ideal free agent to both mentor McCarthy and provide a dependable backup option for the Vikings if needed during the 2025 season.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Joe Flacco

“While there’s been a lot of speculation about the Vikings and Aaron Rodgers—head coach Kevin O’Connell recently mentioned that Rodgers had reached out to Minnesota—Joe Flacco would be a more practical choice,” Knox stated. “Flacco demonstrated with the Indianapolis Colts last season that he can effectively support a young quarterback while also being ready to step in as a starter if required. He could do the same in Minnesota without causing the same media frenzy that Rodgers would bring.”
