The Boston Bruins faltered at the worst possible time, suffering a costly 6-3 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on Sunday night.
Boston started strong, eager to secure their second consecutive win, scoring twice in the first period. However, once the Sabres fought back, the momentum shifted in their favor. The Bruins allowed six goals over the final two periods, including an empty-netter that forced Joonas Korpisalo back on the ice in the final seconds.
“We weren’t good enough in the second period, and in the third, we were just soft,” Elias Lindholm said after the game, per NESN. “It’s not good enough, that’s it… We’ve been struggling in the second period. We usually start well, but fall apart in the second. It’s hard to win games when that happens, and it’s something we can definitely improve.”
Buffalo’s sudden surge overwhelmed the Bruins, leading to another familiar collapse that has plagued them all season. Boston’s failure to maintain their first-period momentum has allowed opposing teams to rally, shifting the Bruins from leading to trailing in games.
“We didn’t like giving up the two-goal lead in the second, but we were still tied 3-3 going into the third period on the road,” said Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco, per NESN. “It’s not a bad spot, even though the second period wasn’t great. In the third, it’s about staying focused. When fatigue or rushing decisions start affecting you, that’s when mistakes happen. We can’t give up and let teams get behind us or give up breakaways on our goaltender—that’s not going to work.”
