Officially Announced: Cubs Now Reached In Agreement To Complete The Signing Of Another Top Veteran After Rejecting Contract Offer From

The Cubs pitcher acquired in the Cody Bellinger trade is traded to the Orioles.
Cody Poteet, a right-hander, was acquired by the Baltimore Orioles from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in exchange for monetary considerations, adding pitching depth. Days before, the Cubs had designated the 30-year-old for assignment in order to clear place on the 40-man roster for Brad Keller. The Orioles now have 39 players on their 40-man roster as Poteet reports to Triple-A Norfolk.

Despite being a low-key move, the trade gives the Orioles pitching staff, which is presently battling with a number of ailments, significant depth. Poteet is a welcome acquisition for Baltimore, which is missing important rotation arms Tyler Wells, Trevor Rogers, Chayce McDermott, Kyle Bradish, and Grayson Rodriguez.

Poteet made his Miami debut in 2021 after being selected by the Marlins in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. With seven starts and a 4.99 ERA, his first major league career as a starter was uneventful. But before having Tommy John surgery late in 2022, he showed improvement in a swingman position, recording a 3.86 ERA in 28 innings over 12 outings.

Orioles' Tyler Wells again out to prove he's a starter

Poteet signed with the Yankees and made a modest impression in limited duty after missing the majority of 2023 recovering. He showed potential as a depth piece in 2024, recording a 2.22 ERA over 24 1/3 innings and a 3.40 ERA in 13 Triple-A starts.

Poteet participated in the transaction that sent Cody Bellinger to the Yankees in December. Poteet moved to Chicago as a result of the agreement, which the Cubs mostly saw as a pay dump and which also removed Bellinger’s contract from their records. Bellinger was expendable because the Cubs had reorganized their outfield with Kyle Tucker and up-and-coming player Pete Crow-Armstrong.
