Following the catastrophic Gerrit Cole injury report, the Yankees need to make one move.
The New York Yankees have yet to fill the void left by Gerrit Cole in their rotation, and Opening Day is Thursday. The Yankee ace had Tommy John surgery on March 11th, which has kept him out for the season. It is hoped that he will return in time for the upcoming season’s Opening Day. Due to a strained oblique, Luis Gil, the current AL Rookie of the Year, will also be out for a long period.
The Yankees are now without two-fifths of the starting lineup that helped them win the World Series the previous season. That isn’t ideal, to be honest. The major offseason addition, Max Fried, will now occupy the top spot. Carlos Rodon, another expensive addition who had a rough first two years in the Bronx, will start on Opening Day against the Milwaukee Brewers. Marcus Stroman will return to the starting lineup, with youngster Will Warren and veteran Carlos Carrasco probably filling the other two spots.
The starting rotation, which was one of New York’s strongest points going into Spring Training, may suddenly be a weakness. General manager Brian Cashman and the Yankee leadership must take something to cement it. The team has to do more, even if Cashman and manager Aaron Boone have stated that they would be keeping an eye on the market over the coming days. Another arm is required, ideally one that can make a significant difference, as they think Fried will. Would phoning the San Diego Padres regarding Dylan Cease be sufficient in this situation? If so, the Yankee general manager and his team should definitely take action.
