With the loss of a starting cornerback and no apparent plan in place to replace him, the Buffalo Bills enter the 2025 season with a void in their secondary.
Targeting a seasoned cornerback who could be seeking a change of scenery, one NFL analyst thinks they could find one on the trade market. Rasul Douglas, who entered free agency after playing in 15 games for the Bills in 2024, will probably need to be replaced by a defensive back of starting level.
Bills Could Give Secondary More Depth
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report claimed that the Bills may get some assistance from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who were able to acquire cornerback Jamel Dean for a comparatively modest cost. Moton said that in exchange for the cornerback, who has been “disappointing” since agreeing to a four-year, $52 million deal extension in 2023, the Bills would give the Buccaneers a 2025 fifth-round selection.

The 28-year-old has allowed a passer rating of 111 and 91.2 during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, respectively, while recording 11 pass breakups and one interception over the last two years. He has also missed nine games during that time,” Moton wrote, adding that the Buccaneers, who had a good pass rush but finished at the bottom of the NFL in yards allowed the previous season, are searching for a change in their secondary.
“Dean might be available for a Super Bowl-contending team looking to fill a need if Tampa Bay targets a cornerback early in the upcoming draft,” Moton wrote.

Bills Will Take Further Action
Dane Jackson, a veteran cornerback who spent four seasons with Buffalo before departing in free agency last season, has returned to the Bills as part of their secondary moves. Jackson will provide the position some much-needed depth, but he probably won’t contend for the starting spot that Douglas left open
Kaiir Elam, a former first-round choice who failed in Buffalo before being sold to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month, will probably be replaced by Jackson.

Christian Benford, a 2022 sixth-round selection who outperformed Elam on the depth chart and has emerged as one of the league’s top cornerbacks, is another player the Bills must decide on.
Although he has not provided any information, Bills general manager Brandon Beane stated that the organization is in talks with Benford over a contract extension. This would be in line with the team’s long-term plan to select players, nurture them into stars, and then retain them in-house, Beane told reporters in March.
