Pro Bowl quarterback will be signed by the Vikings following Aaron Rodgers’ decision
Before Tom Pelissero of NFL Network revealed that the organization was ending its chase and moving on, it appeared as though free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers might sign with the Minnesota Vikings. J.J. McCarthy, who the Vikings picked with the 10th selection in the 2024 NFL Draft and who sat behind Sam Darnold following surgery to repair a meniscus injury in August, is most likely now in charge of the team. With McCarthy and Brett Rypien having started just four games between them, there are just two quarterbacks left on the roster. For this reason, CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin believes Minnesota will sign Jameis Winston.
“Carson Wentz is another big-armed journeyman who makes sense here, especially given his Midwestern roots,” noted Benjamin. However, Winston is a little younger and has a little less starting experience, so Kevin O’Connell could enjoy his fiery leadership in the same space as J.J. McCarthy, who is still developing.
Winston had 12 appearances for the Cleveland Browns in 2024, including seven starts. He completed 181 of 296 passes for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and an 80.6 passer rating. Despite his propensity to turn the ball over, he has shown to be at least entertaining over his 10-year career, which has seen him make one Pro Bowl. He has thrown for 24,225 yards, 154 touchdowns, and 111 interceptions. The Vikings would at least have a seasoned quarterback alternative on the roster in the event that McCarthy doesn’t appear ready by Week 1 if this scenario were to come to pass as well.
