The Houston Texans have announced a record-breaking deal with an elite defensive back.
Derek Stingley Jr., the star cornerback for the Houston Texans, built on his impressive second-season finish by playing every game in his third season after missing 14 in his previous two. Stingley was selected to the First Team All-Pro and earned his first Pro Bowl after setting career-highs in pass deflections and tying 2023 for the most interceptions. He allowed 382 yards, four touchdowns, and an outstanding 51.2 passer rating while recording five interceptions and 18 pass deflections.
In addition to starting the fourth year of his rookie contract, Derek Stingley Jr. has a fully guaranteed fifth-year option worth $17,595,000 that is due in May for the 2026 campaign. According to Article 7, Section 3(k)(i) of the CBA, Stingley is qualified to sign a contract extension or renegotiate as he finished his third regular season. Finally, since he has emerged as one of the league’s best cornerbacks, an extension makes sense for the Texans this offseason and avoids any potential distractions.

The Houston Texans have announced a record-breaking deal for a top defensive back.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Derek Stingley Jr. and the Texans have reached an agreement on a record-breaking contract. Schefter notes that the three-year agreement is worth an incredible $90 million, of which $89 million is guaranteed. Since teams usually include it in their contract extension, it’s unclear if the front office exercised his fully guaranteed fifth-year option for 2026.
