JUPITER, FL The St. Louis Cardinals signed a one-year contract agreement with right-handed reliever Phil Maton.
After being dealt from Tampa Bay to the Mets on July 9, Maton pitched 71 games, going 3-3 with a 3.66 ERA, including 31 games for New York, where he was 2-1 with a 2.52 ERA. During the Mets’ march to the NL Championship Series, he made six postseason appearances.
Maton, who turns 32 on March 25, went unscored against in 25 of 31 games for New York last season and recorded a career-high 18 holds. The Mets rejected Maton’s $7,775,000 option in favor of a $250,000 buyout, making him a free agent.
Andrew Kittredge, a free agent who signed with Baltimore, left St. Louis’ bullpen.
In 415 games over eight major league seasons with San Diego (2017–19), Cleveland (2019–21), Houston (2021–23), Tampa Bay (2024), and the Mets, Maton is 19–15 with five saves and a 4.16 ERA.
In order to create space for Maton on the 40-man roster, left-hander Bailey Horn was sent.
