only in After suffering a crushing defeat against the Blue Jackets, Peter Lav makes a shocking statement.

The New York Rangers acquired Carson Soucy in a pre-trade deadline transaction with the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, less than a week after moving defender Ryan Lindgren.

A few hours earlier, the Rangers had sent player Reilly Smith to the Vegas Golden Knights for a third-round choice in the 2025 NHL Draft and forward prospect Brendan Brisson, which paved the way for the Soucy transaction.

Soucy, who plays a similar game to Lindgren but comes in a much bigger frame (6-foot-5, 208 pounds), was subsequently traded by the Rangers to the Canucks for the third-round pick, which is the San Jose Sharks pick and will be among the first selections in that round.

The 30-year-old has participated in 349 NHL games with the Minnesota Wild, Seattle Kraken, and Canucks. He was teammates with winger J.T. Miller in Vancouver and Rangers defenseman Will Borgen in Seattle.

This deal cannot be evaluated in a vacuum. The Smith deal must also be taken into consideration, as it is the source of this third-round selection used to acquire Soucy. Drury really did a great job on everything. Despite having a mediocre season, the Rangers get a large, strong defenseman with a strong background who is not a rental. For the remainder of this season and the upcoming one, Soucy will be a part of the Rangers’ defensive corps in the top four, and at a reasonable price ($3.25 million AAV). Good. Even better is the fact that, in the end, they just had to pay for Smith, an unrestricted free agent, whom they had no interest in keeping. Two strong left-shot d-men in the top four, if K’Andre Miller re-signs as an RFA this summer. However, if you were expecting for a Jakob Chychrun signing in the offseason, this likely eliminates that possibility. Overall, the Rangers did a great job, improving on the ice right away and staying in a position to be big players in free agency this summer.
