The coaching staff of the New York Rangers makes a new adjustment that will benefit them in advance of the upcoming game.

Examining the New York Rangers’ distinctive five-forward powerplay

The New York Rangers have used a number of players on that man advantage today in place of Adam Fox, who was placed on the injured reserve due to an upper-body injury sustained following an uncomfortable fall during the team’s victory against the New York Islanders. The Blueshirts had to test a few other players in those positions because Fox was out, there wasn’t a defenseman to take his place at quarterback, and J.T. Miller wasn’t practicing because of an illness.

A rare instance of a five-forward powerplay was demonstrated. Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Vincent Trocheck, Artemi Panarin, and Alexis Lafreniere collaborated. Since Kreider is currently recovering from an injury, J.T. Miller will probably take Kreider’s spot on that unit if he is able to go tomorrow. The Rangers may still benefit from the five-forward powerplay unit, though, provided they strike the correct balance. That will depend on how the club and coaching staff perform in the upcoming games.

The organization has relied on New York’s powerplay. When their 5-on-5 offensive hasn’t been effective enough to decide the outcome of close games, they’ve turned to the man advantage to win. That was accomplished with Fox pulling the strings, though, since it takes time to become proficient at quarterbacking a powerplay. This raises the issue of why the Rangers have resorted to using five forwards

With experience on the first powerplay unit, Zac Jones could have something to give. That seems pointless, though, as the Rangers will switch to a new quarterback for their powerplay. Since Panarin is the finest passer, he is the most sensible choice among the possibilities on the man advantage in practice. However, Zibanejad filled in on the backend during the victory over the Islanders, and since he can shoot lethal from anywhere, he could be a superior choice for a deeper deployment.
