Detroit Red Wings To Release 6 Keys Players Following NHL Trade

Red Wings, Ducks, Leafs, Oilers, and Canucks NHL Trade Talk Recap
The Detroit Red Wings traded Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks in today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (February 24). Does this indicate that John Gibson will soon be leaving? Could the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers be a good fit in a trade? Will there be free agency for Mitch Marner? Or, prior to the deadline, will the Toronto Maple Leafs exert some pressure?

Ville Husso, a goalie, was acquired by the Anaheim Ducks from the Detroit Red Wings for future consideration. Some fans first thought this would indicate the Ducks were about to deal John Gibson, but NHL source Frank Seravalli stated the move had nothing to do with any possible trade.

Will Marner Face Pressure from the Maple Leafs?
In an appearance on First Up, TSN’s Darren Dreger concurred with Bob McKenzie’s assessment that Mitch Marner will most likely be entering free agency this summer. Will the Leafs circumvent Marner’s agent in an attempt to exert some pressure on him? Or will the Leafs wait for events to unfold and take a chance on Marner going unsigned?

Zegras Suspended, Hartman’s Suspension Reduced
The NHL DoPS banned Trevor Zegras for three games for interfering against Detroit’s Michael Rasmussen. Todd McLellan, the head coach of the Red Wings, was furious that no penalty was given and that all officials failed to make the call. Zegras was suspended for the first time.

After the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) appealed, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman lowered Ryan Hartman’s penalty from ten to eight games. Given Hartman’s history of NHL suspensions, the decision was unexpected. The ten games were deemed excessive by Bettman.
