News from the Virginia Tech Hokies: Two Possible Choices to Replace the Most Talented Superstar Following the Recruit of
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman revealed last week that Virginia Tech was interested in Christian Taylor, the defensive quality coach for the Buffalo Bills, to succeed Tyler Bowen, the former offensive coordinator who resigned to accept a position at Ohio State on the offensive line. Word of Taylor and Virginia Tech dwindled over time and eventually faded into the background.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Monday morning that Brent Pry, the head coach of the Hokies, was looking to hire a new offensive coordinator. According to Thamel, Virginia Tech was now aiming to replace Bowen with Philip Montgomery. On Monday morning, the school

This is a fantastic hire for Virginia Tech and Pry, even though the search went a little longer than some may have desired. In addition to his stint as Tulsa’s head coach, Montgomery served as an offensive coordinator for a while and had some players who later played in the NFL. In 2015, he was also the head coach of Tulsa, who won the Independence Bowl in Frank Beamer’s last game as head coach, 55-52. Montgomery was Tulsa’s head coach during the inaugural season.
At Baylor, Montgomery coached Robert Griffin as the quarterback in addition to Case Keenum and Bryce Petty. When the Bears won the Big 12 title in 2013, he was a nominee for the Broyles Award.
On the surface, this seems like a great addition to Virginia Tech. In addition to his wealth of expertise, he shares a connection with Baylor quarterback Kyron Drones, who transferred to Blacksburg prior to the 2023 campaign. With Pop Watson returning to the Hokies, the new offensive coordinator will have a lot of choices when it comes to creating packages for the next campaign.
With the Hokies’ spring practices quickly approaching, Montgomery has little time to get to work and assemble an offense for the forthcoming year.
