
No. 7 Purdue loses to No. 16 Wisconsin at home for the second consecutive time.
On Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana, No. 16 Wisconsin defeated No. 7 Purdue 94-84 on the road thanks to 21 of his 32 points in the second half.
Trey Kaufman-Renn of the Boilermakers scored 30 points, but Tonje made 10 of 15 shots from the field, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range. 12 of 16 was sunk by Kaufman-Renn.
The Badgers (20-5, 10-4 Big Ten) scored 58 points in the second half to win for the fourth time in a row, led by 17 points from Max Klesmit and 12 from Nolan Winter. Wisconsin had a strong 61.5 percent shooting percentage.
After starting the game with an average of 1.7 points, Jack Janicki finished with 11 points off the bench after making three of four 3-point attempts. After Kamari McGee was ejected in the first half, he was given more playing time.
Fletcher Loyer scored 15 points and C.J. Cox had 13 for the Boilermakers (19-7, 11-4), who have lost two straight following an 11-1 stretch.
Before Tonje started an 11-0 Wisconsin run, Braden Smith made a jumper to put Purdue ahead 50-47. Tonje sandwiched scores around John Blackwell’s 3-pointer and made a four-point play.
Halfway into the second half, Janicki extended the Badgers’ advantage to 71-60 with two 3-pointers in a 92-second span. Tonje stopped the momentum with a forceful slam after Purdue narrowed the gap to six points at 75-69.
With 1:02 remaining, Myles Colvin made a 3-pointer to cut Wisconsin’s advantage to 86-79. At the charity stripe, though, the Badgers essentially secured the victory.
With 6:20 left in the first half, McGee attempted to break through a screen by Kaufman-Renn, but referees determined that he had used excessive force below the waist, and McGee was dismissed. Purdue’s advantage was increased to 35-26 after Kaufman-Renn hit a layup and sunk two free throws.
However, Tonje made a 3-pointer and a jumper to help Wisconsin cut the lead to one at the half.
