According to many media sites on Wednesday night, Steve Wilks has agreed to terms to serve as the defensive coordinator for the incoming York Jets under incoming head coach Aaron Glenn.
After serving as San Francisco’s DC for one season, Wilks, 55, left the NFL as a coach in 2024. He was dismissed by the 49ers following their Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 2018, he spent one season as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, which finished 3-13. In 2022, Wilks went 6-6 while serving as the Carolina Panthers’ interim head coach.
From 2005 to 2017, Wilks worked as a defensive assistant in the NFL for Washington, Chicago, San Diego, and Carolina. In 2017, he was the defensive coordinator for the Panthers, and in 2019, he was the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.
In 2021, he resumed his coaching career at the collegiate level, having previously served as defensive coordinator at Missouri from 1995 to 2004.
During his news conference on Monday, Glenn stated that he had no intention of calling defensive plays. From 2021 to 2024, he was the DC for the Detroit Lions.
“I want to be the best head coach you can find,” said Glenn, who served as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2021 until this season. “In order for me to do that, I think I need to manage the game.”
On Wednesday evening, NFL Network also revealed that Glenn has hired Steve Heiden to coach his offensive line. In Detroit, Heiden coached the tight ends with Glenn. Additionally, it has been claimed that Glenn plans to appoint Chris Banjo as coordinator of special teams. This season, Banjo served as the Denver Broncos’ assistant special teams coach.
