According to many sources, including SNY, former Chicago Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay has found a new home after agreeing to a two-year minor league contract with the New York Mets.

Three days after the Cubs designated Alzolay for assignment on November 19, he chose to exercise his right to free agency. Alzolay had Tommy John surgery in September, and the Cubs knew he was unlikely to pitch in 2025, so they parted ways.

Alzolay will be able to continue his rehabilitation with the team in 2025 as part of the rumored two-year contract, which will prepare him for the 2026 campaign.

After he emerged as the Cubs’ closer in 2023, he suffered two separate spells on the disabled list, including the 60-day IL last year, and the operation was the result of two years of right forearm strains. Before being shut down for the season, he spent some time with Triple-A Iowa and the ACL Cubs on his July rehab assignment.

He pitched 18 games in relief last season, going 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA, four saves in nine chances, and one hold. He only pitched 17.1 innings, recording six walks and 13 strikeouts. For a significant amount of the season, the Cubs were stuck in the ninth inning due to Alzolay’s injuries and decline in effectiveness.

In 2023, he made his breakthrough, switched to the closer position, and had 22 saves in 25 opportunities while also recording seven holds. He pitched in 58 games, a career best, going 2-5 with a 2.67 ERA, 13 walks, and 67 strikeouts.

His career started as a starter, and he started 21 of his 29 games in 2021, spending the most of the season in the Cubs’ rotation. With a save and a 4.58 ERA, he had a 5-13 record. In 125.1 innings, he walked 34 and struck out 128. He spent the most of the 2022 season out due to another injury, which led to his move to the bullpen.

Chicago enters spring training without a designated closer. Porter Hodge, who stepped into the job late in the season and saved nine games in 12 opportunities, is the Cubs’ closest substitute. He had a 1.88 ERA and went 3-1 as well. In 43 innings, he walked 19 and struck out 52.

He is not the Mets’ acquisition, and the deal has not been properly disclosed.
