The Astros staged a fan fest this weekend, and there was a lot of chatter about Alex Bregman.
Houston allegedly re-opened discussions with the All-Star infielder with their six-year, $156 million proposal still on the table. Manager Joe Espada made it plain he wants the 30-year-old back on the club. A Bregman deal would allow his club to go past the competitive balance tax, but owner Jim Crane probably doesn’t want that to happen. That’s why general manager Dana Brown expressed cautious hope.
According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Brown described the likelihood of Bregman returning to Houston as a “long shot.” The “door is cracked,” according to the Astros general manager, which was consistent with the rumors that surfaced before the weekend.
Additionally, Houston attempted to deal Ryan Pressly, a reliever with a no-trade clause. That agreement may affect the Astros’ chances of re-signing Bregman and change the intentions of other teams, including the Detroit Tigers.
The Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Tigers are the four clubs believed to be interested in Bregman as a result of the Astros resuming discussions.
The narrative continues beneath the commercial.
