I Want To Leave For Him To Stay: New York Mets All Time Star Confirm He Want To Leave Due

As they try to restructure their roster for 2025, the Mets are at a familiar crossroads, and part of that process involves locating a new home for veteran outfielder Starling Marte.

New York seems prepared to move on from the 35-year-old, who has one year left on his $19 million contract. Finding a buyer has proven to be more difficult than expected, even if dealing Marte may provide some financial freedom.

The Mets are aggressively trying to find Marte a “better situation,” but they also recognize that he may still play a part on the team if no deal is reached, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. According to Puma, “Starling Marte was told last month that the Mets would try to trade him to a better situation, but they could also see a role for him if he stays.” Despite Jesse Winker’s comeback, Marte is still a viable righty DH option. No traction for a trade at this time. Marte owes $19 million.
A Sharp Reduction in Output
Marte had a disappointing 2024 season. With only seven home runs, 40 RBIs, and a 104 wRC+ in just 93 games, he slashed.269/.327/.388. His once-signature speed seemed to wane as well, as seen by the fact that he only managed 16 stolen bases, down from 24 in the previous season in an equally short 86-game campaign.

From a defensive perspective, Marte’s numbers kept declining. He pitched 680.1 innings in right field, recording -8 outs over average and -6 defensive runs saved. Marte is difficult to sell at this point in his career due to his declining defensive play and decreased offensive output, especially for a team seeking to

must pay more than a salary dump to obtain him.

The dilemma facing the Mets
With Jesse Winker’s re-signing and the rise of younger outfield alternatives, Marte doesn’t have much place on the Mets roster. Marte’s $19 million salary is an expensive insurance policy for a guy who no longer fits the mold of an everyday contributor, even though he could potentially play as a right-handed designated hitter.

Although they could have to forgo a part of the agreement in order to enable a trade, the management is probably trying to find a team ready to absorb some of Marte’s salary. A team seeking experienced depth may find Marte’s leadership and experience appealing, but his deteriorating play makes him anything from a hot commodity.
