S.C. CLEMSON (AP) – The Board of Trustees Compensation Committee of Clemson confirmed the hiring of Tom Allen, the defensive coordinator at Penn State, for the same position with the Tigers on Tuesday.
With over thirty years of coaching experience, Allen most recently helped the Nittany Lions reach a school-record 13 wins and a semifinal participation in the College Football Playoffs. Wes Goodwin, who was sacked earlier this month after the Tigers had trouble stopping the run, gets replaced by Allen.
This season, Penn State was ninth in the country for scoring defense (16.5 points per game) and seventh in total defense (294.8 yards per game). The Nittany Lions finished seventh in sacks (44), and second in tackles for loss (119) in the country.

In a press release, Swinney stated, “We have a great football coach – and a great leader of men – coming to Clemson.” “Some of the greatest names in our industry strongly praised him, and he has a wealth of knowledge. We are thrilled to have him as our defensive coordinator at Clemson after he had an outstanding season as defensive coordinator at Penn State.
Allen also served as Penn State’s linebackers coach. In Penn State’s 38-10 victory over SMU in the College Football Playoffs’ opening round, his defense turned two interceptions into scores.
In a 31-14 victory in the CFP quarterfinals, the Nittany Lions also restricted Ashton Jeanty, the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, to a season-low 3.47 yards per rush and no touchdowns.
