This winter, the New York Mets are the clear favorites to sign Pete Alonso, a free agent first baseman. They are the team in charge and have just as much money as any other organization, if not more. However, he has not yet been signed by the Mets. Instead, third baseman Alex Bregman is reportedly a target for them.
It’s possible that the Alonso sweepstakes is more complicated than it seems. A couple dark horse suitors in the Alonso sweepstakes were just made public by Mike Puma of the New York Post. The Texas Rangers were identified as one of the suitors, and the match seems a little too obvious to overlook.
“The 2023 World Series champions are still in a win-now mode with a roster that includes Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, and Jacob deGrom,” Puma said. “It’s possible the Rangers might turn to Alonso for more pop after trading lefty reliever Robert Garcia for (Nathaniel) Lowe to Washington over the weekend. If the Rangers sign Alonso, Jake Burger, who was obtained in a trade with the Miami Marlins,
could be included in the DH and third base equation in addition to being a part of the first base mix. There’s no denying the fit. The Rangers are determined to win and recently traded their first baseman. They may be so desperate that they are prepared to pay more for Alonso than Steve Cohen, the owner of the Mets. It goes without saying that Cohen would prevail in a bidding war. However, Cohen and the Mets may choose to target Bregman while allowing Alonso to go elsewhere. The Rangers make a lot of sense if that turns out to be the case.
