FRISCO: Under coordinator Mike Zimmer, the Dallas Cowboys defense has had a wild 2024 as they adjust to a new scheme. One of the team’s major narratives going into the season was the switch from Dan Quinn to Zimmer, and many people were worried after the first few weeks. The Cowboys, however, have come together on that side of the ball and been a cohesive team since the middle of the season. Their comeback reached its pinnacle on Sunday night when the Cowboys defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers thanks to an incredible defensive performance. However, that triumph was undoubtedly earned and not without cost. In addition to being in his first season as the defense’s leader, Zimmer had to usher in a new era amid high expectations.
The veteran coach suffered as a result of this responsibility. “I’ve enjoyed myself… However, it has been challenging. I will tell the truth about that. This Christmas week, he said, “It’s been difficult.” The 68-year-old Zimmer has accomplished a great deal in a brief period of time under extraordinary circumstances. If he stays on as coach after this season,
there is no doubting the consistency he adds to Dallas. However, that is a big “if.” The expectations will be higher next season and there will be no toleration for moral victories. Whoever leads this defense will hold onto this job or take it at a disadvantage. It is certainly plausible Zimmer does not have the drive or dedication to manage such challenges. However, if he does choose to return, he will have superstar Micah Parsons guiding his unit,
an edge that 31 other teams do not possess. Regardless of Zimmer’s choice – and/or the decision from ownership via Jerry and Stephen Jones – Parsons’ leadership will be important for the Cowboys entering. a new season. But it is crucial to realize that the famously gruff Zimmer (who has been an acquired taste for Micah and his players) came here on a one-year agreement, knowing full well he may be gone after this “Blow It Up” season; in a way he took on as a favor to the Jones family. At the same time,
as he told reporter Mike Fisher at training camp, he’s got relatives, including grandchildren, who live in the DFW region. There are all sorts of options. Dallas might maintain this coaching staff as is. Head coach Mike McCarthy might be permitted to resign as part of a comprehensive housecleaning. Heck, there are many in Cowboys Nation who would like to see Zimmer as a head coach again, as he was in Minnesota. Like McCarthy, Zimmer’s fate after this season is an unknown. But one more season may be an underestimated lift for the Cowboys prepared for possibly huge changes elsewhere in the summer – assuming “hard” hasn’t been too much for those involved.
