After the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 3 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed concerns about both his performance and the team’s overall play, which should alarm the rest of the NFL. In his postgame remarks on September 22, he stated, “We haven’t played well in any of the three games, yet we’ve managed to win. Personally, I need to return to my fundamentals, which is unusual this early in the season.
Fortunately, I’m not at my best, but we’re still winning, and I need to improve to enhance the offense.” Despite Mahomes not being at his peak, the absence of starting running back Isiah Pacheco and veteran receiver Hollywood Brown, along with defensive mistakes, the Chiefs remain one of five undefeated teams. This spells trouble for the other 31 NFL teams, as the two-time Super Bowl champions are likely to improve moving forward, barring injuries.
Chiefs Beat Falcons on Sunday Night Football
In their 22-17 victory over Atlanta, Patrick Mahomes completed 26 of 39 passes for 217 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. His top target was second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice, who made 12 catches on 14 targets for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Rookie running back Carson Steele stepped in for Pacheco, rushing 17 times for 72 yards, averaging 4.2 yards per carry.
On defense, second-year defensive back Chamarri Conner led the team with 10 tackles, two passes defended, and one interception. Linebacker Nick Bolton recorded a team-high three tackles for loss and eight total tackles, including a crucial stop of Falcons running back Bijan Robinson on a 4th-and-1 in Kansas City’s red zone.
With a 3-0 record, the Chiefs will next face the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers away on Sunday, September 29.
