Complacency is not a concept Blackwater embraces as they enter the second round of eliminations in the PBA 49th Season Governors’ Cup on Tuesday, riding high on a confidence-boosting three-game winning streak.
The Bossing are aware of the stakes. The last time they enjoyed a three-game winning streak, during the opening round of the Philippine Cup last season, they faced a disappointing turn of events, losing the next seven games and missing the playoffs.
Facing a similar situation now, Blackwater coach Jeff Cariaso emphasized that the team understands they have not accomplished anything yet. After leveling their record to 3-3 with a 110-99 victory over NLEX last Friday, Cariaso stated, “We need to guard against any sense of complacency. I believe we’re in a good position. The players understand me better now and are aware of the current situation.”
Blackwater’s upcoming game is set to be a significant one as they face Barangay Ginebra. The Bossing’s winning streak began with their first encounter against Ginebra, where George King made an impressive debut with 33 points and 19 rebounds, and Sedrick Barefield clinched the victory with a crucial four-point shot in their 95-88 win.Barangay Ginebra has since bounced back, holding a 3-2 record, slightly ahead of Blackwater’s 3-3 in Group B.
George King expressed his eagerness for the rematch, saying, “I’m looking forward to it. It’s just another game, but I love playing. Since we’ve already faced them once and I was part of that game, we have some familiarity with them.”
