Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has reached a huge four-year, $240 million contract, according to several U.S. media outlets on Sunday. This deal will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history. While the Cowboys confirmed Prescott’s contract extension in a social media post, they did not disclose specific details.
Dak Prescott has spent his entire career with the Cowboys since his NFL debut in 2016, when he was named Rookie of the Year. His new contract surpasses the $45 million annually earned by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
ESPN reports that $231 million of Prescott’s new deal is guaranteed, exceeding the $230 million fully guaranteed contract signed by Deshaun Watson when he moved from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns. The extension, which lasts through the 2028 season, was confirmed as the Cowboys prepared to start their season against Cleveland later on Sunday.
Prescott’s future was uncertain as he approached the final year of a $160 million, four-year deal signed in 2021. Despite his success, including a Rookie of the Year award, Prescott has struggled to end the Cowboys’ 28-year Super Bowl drought and has faced criticism for his playoff performance, winning only two of seven postseason games.
