Sad News: 49ers’ Wide Receiver Ricky Pearsall Rob And Shot In The Chest, More Check Comments

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who was shot in the chest on Saturday afternoon during an attempted robbery in central San Francisco, saw his condition improve to fair on Sunday. Previously, Pearsall, 23, had been described as being in “serious but stable condition” at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Pearsall’s mother shared on social media that the bullet exited through his back and avoided vital organs, noting that he is “extremely lucky.”

The suspect, a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, was apprehended on Saturday, as reported by San Francisco Police Chief William Scott.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Geary Boulevard in the Union Square area when the suspect attempted to rob Pearsall at gunpoint. A 911 call reporting gunfire at the corner of Geary and Grant streets came in at 3:38 p.m., and police arrived shortly thereafter.

Earlier that afternoon, Pearsall had been at an event center signing autographs before heading to Union Square, according to ABC 7 San Francisco.

The San Francisco Police Department reported that a physical altercation took place between Pearsall and the suspect during the robbery attempt, leading to injuries on both sides. Both Pearsall and the suspect were taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

Police Chief Scott explained that a struggle between Pearsall and the suspect led to gunfire, resulting in injuries to both. The condition of the suspect has not been disclosed.

Scott noted there was “no indication” that Pearsall was targeted because of his profession, and that a single gun was used in the multiple shots fired during the robbery attempt. The investigation will review footage from nearby surveillance cameras to determine if anyone else was involved.49ers injury updates: Ricky Pearsall will return to practice on Monday - Niners NationScott also mentioned that Pearsall was conscious and able to speak with police about the incident, but further conversations will occur as he recovers.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said a decision on charges for the juvenile suspect will be made by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Scott commended the prompt actions of the officers and pledged to ensure justice is served.

Pearsall, who was drafted by the 49ers in the first round with the 31st overall pick in April, has faced injury setbacks since joining the team, including issues with his hamstring and shoulder. He returned to practice last week wearing a noncontact jersey as he recovers.

Pearsall’s college career began at Arizona State before transferring to Florida, where he recorded 65 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns last season. His college career totals were 159 catches for 2,420 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The 49ers have been hopeful that Pearsall could contribute as a rookie backup to starters Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel Sr.

Following the shooting, Samuel posted on X expressing relief that Pearsall was doing well, saying, “He’s good … Thank god.”
