Virginia Tech vs Vanderbilt: Three Players to Watch on Vanderbilt’s Offense this Saturday

The Virginia Tech Hokies aim to kick off the 2024 college football season on a strong note as they head to Vanderbilt for a game on Saturday at FirstBank Stadium.

Vanderbilt is coming off a tough season, having struggled significantly in the SEC with a 2-10 record and failing to win any of their eight conference games. Despite the home-field advantage, Vanderbilt is a 13-point underdog. However, the team is looking for a new beginning under the guidance of new head coach Jerry Kill and offensive coordinator Tim Beck. Adding an intriguing element to Vanderbilt’s offense is the fact that both the head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback Diego Pavia have joined the team from New Mexico State.

1. QB Diego Pavia

Diego Pavia ended last season with 26 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 2,195 passing yards, and 851 rushing yards, earning him the USA Conference Player of the Year award due to his dual-threat skills. After spending two years at New Mexico State, he transferred to New Mexico Military Institute before returning to New Mexico State, where he led the team to a victory over SEC rival Auburn. He concluded the season ranked sixth in offensive yards among non-Power 5 players, accumulating a total of 3,896 yards.

2. RB Sedrick Alexander

Running back Sedrick Alexander is another key player to watch for the Commodores. He was named an SEC All-Freshman in 2023 and led Vanderbilt in both rushing touchdowns and attempts, recording 371 rushing yards on 96 carries. Alexander was the top freshman rusher in the SEC and was the only player with at least four rushing touchdowns. He also became the first Vanderbilt running back since 2019 to score multiple touchdowns in a single game.Virginia Tech football: Another sad day for the Hokies - Gobbler Country3. WR Junior Sherrill

As a freshman last year, Junior Sherrill appeared in all 12 games, recording 3 touchdowns, 20 receptions, and 293 yards. With several of Vanderbilt’s top receivers transferring to other programs, Sherrill is expected to step up and become the primary target, being the leading receiver returning from last season. Additionally, Junior Sherrill earned recognition as Mr. Football in Tennessee and was named MaxPreps’ Tennessee Player of the Year.
