The anticipation is building as the Gators approach their week one game against the Miami Hurricanes, just three days away. After struggling defensively last season, Florida needs significant improvements on that side of the ball to compete effectively. A key focus will be on Graham Mertz’s performance this Saturday.
In last year’s season opener against the Utah Utes, Florida’s offensive line faced challenges, allowing five sacks and seven tackles for loss. Despite these issues, Mertz managed to throw for 333 yards and a touchdown on 31 completions.
“He had some really impressive practices before our break on Sunday. He looked sharp all week, especially on Friday and Saturday. You can tell he’s excited about this opportunity,” Billy Napier commented on Mertz’s preparation for the game against Miami.
With Mertz now in his second year in Billy Napier’s system, he has become more adept, making it rare for veteran defenders like Jason Marshall to intercept him.
“I can’t catch a pick from him anymore,” Marshall remarked.
The connection between Mertz and his receivers is much stronger compared to last season. With several key offensive players returning, the experience gained in year three should enhance their readiness for the season opener.“I think having that experience from last year and being able to react to in-game situations will be crucial,” Mertz said. “We’ve learned from last year’s challenges, and I want to put together a well-executed game.”
Miami returns seven defensive linemen, including the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, Rueben Bain, and senior linebacker Francisco Mauigoa, who led the ACC with 18 tackles for loss last season.
“They have strong players up front, and their linebackers are solid,” Mertz said of Mauigoa. “They’re a talented defense that trusts their players, which will make for an interesting game.”
While the Gators have faced outside criticism throughout the offseason, Mertz remains focused on proving his teammates right rather than seeking external validation.
“I’m driven by my teammates and the people in this building, not by outside opinions,” Mertz said. “We know our performance last year left something to be desired, but we control how our story unfolds this year.”
Under Billy Napier, the Gators hold a 9-4 record at home. To extend their streak of 33 consecutive home-opening wins, they must improve execution in crucial moments on Saturday.
“Coach emphasizes that if we execute well, the atmosphere will be electric. If not, it won’t be,” Mertz said. “I have a job to do, and my team is counting on me. That focus will drive the excitement and desired outcome.”
The Gators enter the game as +120 underdogs, with a 57.3% chance of victory compared to Miami’s 42.7%, according to ESPN.
