With the Buffalo Bills’ preseason now concluded, their next appearance on the field will be for a game that counts. Before the season officially begins, though, there’s one final step: roster cuts. Brandon Beane must finalize the roster at 53 active players and assemble a practice squad.
Although the Bills will be parting ways with some players, they have a chance to enhance their roster by acquiring talent from other teams. Given the injuries the Bills have faced this summer, it’s crucial for them to consider adding depth to various positions. Alex Ballentine from Bleacher Report has identified seven players who might be released from their current teams and could be valuable additions. Among them, linebacker/safety Markquese Bell of the Dallas Cowboys is noted as a potential fit for the Bills.
Ballentine highlights that Bell’s versatility could be especially appealing to the Bills. With the team needing to replace Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde, and now having lost Matt Milano for most of the season due to a torn biceps, Bell’s flexibility on the field would be an asset.Versatility is a key trait that Sean McDermott values in his players. Since taking over in 2017, McDermott has emphasized the ability to adapt to multiple positions. The Bills’ defensive scheme allows for flexibility, which is crucial given their injury issues, including Milano’s significant loss for 2024. While the Bills have plans to address the safety positions, replacing Hyde and Poyer remains a concern heading into the season.
Although Ballentine suggests that Bell might be cut from Dallas, the Bills shouldn’t rely solely on the possibility of acquiring him. Bell was part of a highly effective Cowboys defense last season under Dan Quinn. If Bell does become available, Beane should consider exploring his potential value for the team.
