In 2001, the Swede was appointed as the first foreign manager of the England men’s football team, leading the renowned “golden generation” that featured players like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard.

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away at the age of 76, according to his family. Eriksson had been battling pancreatic cancer and had disclosed at the start of 2024 that he had at most a year to live.

In a statement, his family announced, “Sven-Goran Eriksson has died. After a prolonged illness, he passed away this morning at home, surrounded by his loved ones.”

His immediate survivors include his daughter Lina; son Johan, his wife Amana, and granddaughter Sky; his father Sven; his partner Yanisette and her son Alcides; and his brother Lars-Erik and his wife Jumnong.

Prince William, the Football Association’s president, led the tributes, expressing his sorrow: “I was saddened to hear of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s passing. I met him several times during his time as England manager and was always impressed by his charisma and dedication to football. My thoughts are with his family and friends. He was a true gentleman of the sport.”
