Just In: Experienced And Talented Youngster With Huge Potentials Signs With Longhorns.

The Longhorns have officially bolstered their young backfield by adding an experienced and skilled running back with exciting potential.

With the Texas football home opener against Colorado State approaching, the Longhorns have made a late addition to their running back group by signing fifth-year senior Velton Gardner, a former Kansas Jayhawk and SMU Mustang.

Injuries have severely impacted the Longhorns’ running back depth, with sophomore CJ Baxter and freshman Christian Clark both sidelined for the season. These players were anticipated to play significant roles this year, so Gardner’s arrival via the transfer portal brings much-needed experience and speed to the team.

Velton Gardner’s move to Texas was announced late on August 21 through social media. Gardner, originally from Skyline High School in Dallas, TX, was ranked as the 40th-best athlete and 83rd overall prospect in the state in 2019. He initially committed to the Kansas Jayhawks, where he played 19 games, starting six, and accumulated 127 carries for 519 rushing yards (4.1 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. He also had 13 receptions for 44 receiving yards.

Gardner transferred to SMU in 2022, where he had a strong season with 70 carries for 368 rushing yards (5.3 yards per carry) and one touchdown in eight games. He improved in the following year, rushing for 137 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries (6.0 yards per carry).Velton Gardner, SMU, Running BackWith the Longhorns down to three scholarship running backs—junior Jayden Blue, sophomore Quintrevion Wisner, and freshman Jerrick Gibson—coaches Sarkisian and Choice have added Gardner to provide additional depth.

Gardner’s career totals include 1,024 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 229 carries with Kansas and SMU. While he may not be a starter, his experience and solid production make him a valuable rotational back, offering fresh legs and depth. His speed and ball security, with no fumbles in his career, will be beneficial for Texas. Gardner’s experience in zone runs aligns well with Coach Sarkisian’s offensive strategies, and he is expected to play a key role as a complementary back throughout the season.
