The Los Angeles Lakers face an offseason filled with uncertainties, particularly regarding LeBron James’ potential free agency. To potentially entice James to remain with the Lakers, one strategy is for the front office to be innovative in adding another star player. 
One candidate who might consider accepting a slightly lower salary to join the Lakers is Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors. Thompson, who has expressed fondness for the Lakers due to his father’s ties to the team, could offer valuable contributions alongside James and Anthony Davis. However, it’s unlikely Thompson could demand a maximum salary in today’s market. Considering his shooting prowess and effectiveness, joining the Lakers could benefit him.
Nevertheless, financial constraints pose a significant obstacle. Thompson recently completed a lucrative contract with the Warriors, and the Lakers are already over the salary cap. While James could potentially opt for a lesser contract to facilitate roster improvements, there’s no indication of his willingness to do so. For the Lakers to pursue Thompson, they would need D’Angelo Russell to opt out, providing the necessary salary exception. Alternatively, a sign-and-trade deal with the Warriors might be more feasible.
Thompson’s impressive statistics make him a coveted asset for numerous teams, including the Orlando Magic, who possess significant cap space. However, the Lakers’ pursuit of Thompson remains speculative, contingent on various financial and logistical factors.
