Alabama Football lands Wake Forest transfer CB See

DaShawn Jones’ expected commitment to Alabama was confirmed on Wednesday, marking a significant acquisition for the Tide as they secure the seasoned cornerback they’ve been pursuing all spring.

Transitioning from the ACC to the SEC, Jones brings experience as a standout player for the Demon Deacons in 2023. At Tuscaloosa, he aims to strengthen a cornerback unit abundant in top-tier freshmen but lacking in game time.Making the Most of an Opportunity - Wake Forest University Athletics

While USC transfer Domani Jackson appears to lead the pack, the competition for the other cornerback position is wide open, with Jones contending against newcomers like true freshman Zabien Brown. Alabama heads into the season with youthful cornerback options, none of whom have played in the SEC before, setting the stage for a rapid learning curve, especially with challenging early-season matchups.

The Crimson Tide will rely on a formidable front seven to shield the secondary initially, allowing the young cornerback group to find its rhythm. If they can generate a strong pass rush, it will ease the burden on the defense and foster cohesion in the backfield.

During the spring, Alabama faced losses in the secondary with safeties Peyton Woodyard and Tony Mitchell entering the transfer portal. In response, they secured Jones at cornerback and added former Charlotte safety Kameron Howard.

The trade-off presents an intriguing long-term narrative, as Woodyard and Mitchell boast superior recruiting rankings, but Jones and Howard offer extensive collegiate starting experience. Consequently, Alabama gains immediate benefits for the upcoming 2024 season, addressing their need for seasoned players in the secondary, particularly at cornerback, with the acquisition of DaShawn Jones.
