In an attack down the left side, Jade Philogene beat his defender and passed to Tyler Morton, but Morton missed the target, shooting over the bar.
Philogene scored the first goal of the match around the half-hour mark.
Kasey Palmer equalized for Coventry City with a powerful free-kick from 25 yards out.
Collins made a crucial save to deny Philogene shortly after the restart.
Hull City regained the lead with a penalty converted by Fabio Carvalho just before halftime.

Ryan Giles came on as a substitute and had an opportunity to score, but he missed the target.
Hull City took the lead once more after a defensive error, allowing Noah Ohio to score.
Coventry City almost equalized in stoppage time, but Liam Kitching’s header was saved by Ryan Allsop.
The final score was Coventry City 2, Hull City 3.
