A basketball icon and five-time NBA champion, renowned for his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, recently made a return trip to Manila after a hiatus of 13 years, much to the delight of Filipino basketball enthusiasts. Derek Fisher graced the Jr. NBA Philippines Coaches Clinic held at the NBA Community Court in Mandaluyong, where he was warmly received by fans eager to welcome him back. Esquire Philippines caught up with him for a brief interview following the clinic.
Despite his illustrious NBA career, Fisher, a 6-foot-1 point guard hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, never anticipated the trajectory his life would take. Selected as the 24th pick by the Lakers in the 1996 NBA Draft, Fisher’s childhood dreams seemed distant from reality until his name was called on draft night, evoking an emotional response of disbelief and joy. Teamed up with Kobe Bryant and later Shaquille O’Neal, Fisher contributed to the Lakers’ championship successes, cherishing every moment and considering it a privilege rather than an entitlement.
Throughout his 18-season NBA journey, including 12 seasons with the Lakers, Fisher experienced unparalleled success, including three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002 and consecutive titles in 2009 and 2010. Among his many memorable moments, Fisher’s game-winning shot in Game 5 of the 2004 Western Conference Finals against San Antonio Spurs stands out, as does his crucial layup in Game 3 of the 2010 NBA Finals in Boston.
Reflecting on his return to Manila, Fisher fondly recalls the warm reception he and fellow NBA stars received during their previous visit, characterized by an electrifying atmosphere at the Coliseum. This time, Fisher returned to share his expertise with local coaches at the Jr. NBA Coaches Clinic, alongside esteemed mentors Norman Black and Jong Uichico. He also engaged with fans during a meet-and-greet session at the NBA Store in SM Megamall, expressing excitement about exploring Filipino cuisine with his wife and seeking recommendations for culinary delights to savor during his stay.
