John O’Shea reveals Tony Mowbray chat and his Birmingham City gripe

John O’Shea departed Birmingham City in January with disappointment over the lack of opportunity given to sacked manager Wayne Rooney to address the team’s weaknesses during the transfer window. The club’s decline from the top six to the bottom third of the Championship coincided with Rooney taking over from John Eustace in October.Birmingham City coach John O'Shea

Rooney’s arrival brought O’Shea and Ashley Cole, former teammates, as part of a staff overhaul. However, the team’s performance worsened, leading to Rooney’s dismissal after a heavy defeat to Leeds United on New Year’s Day. Tony Mowbray replaced him, and the board’s decision to act allowed Mowbray to make signings upon his appointment.

Mowbray brought in Paik Seung-ho, Andre Dozzell, and Alex Pritchard to strengthen the midfield. Initially, results improved, but Mowbray’s health issues led to Gary Rowett returning to manage for the rest of the season. O’Shea, who temporarily managed the Republic of Ireland, regretted not having the chance to recruit players with Rooney, considering the initial long-term project vision. However, the team’s poor run of two wins in 15 matches disrupted those plans.

Reflecting on his time at Birmingham, O’Shea acknowledged the challenges and expressed his admiration for the club. He also mentioned briefly discussing Sunderland with Mowbray, where O’Shea spent a significant part of his playing career. With Sunderland potentially seeking a new manager in the summer, O’Shea expressed interest but also noted the club’s reliance on young players, which presents both opportunities and challenges.
