Nottingham Forest considered signing ‘unbelievable’ player in January, he broke records while at Man United

Nottingham Forest fought tirelessly to secure a goalkeeper during the January transfer window, eventually sealing the deal with Matz Sels. However, there was initial interest in acquiring a top-tier goalkeeper for the City Ground.

Sels has performed adequately since joining Forest, earning recognition for his contributions both at the club and with the Belgian national team.

Despite the signings of Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos in the summer, neither goalkeeper has met expectations at Forest.

Initially, it appeared that Nuno Espirito Santo would stick with the existing goalkeepers at his disposal. However, he opted to bring in Sels from Strasbourg for a reasonable fee of £5 million.David Rogers/Getty Images

There was speculation about Forest pursuing David de Gea, a world-class goalkeeper available on a free transfer after leaving Manchester United. However, nothing materialized, as reported by The Telegraph.

The upcoming summer transfer window brings uncertainty for goalkeeper recruitment. It’s crucial for Forest to make the right choice, with potential departures paving the way for new acquisitions. Caoimhin Kelleher has been linked with the club.

Sels is expected to remain with Forest next season and compete for the number one spot. However, the club may seek a younger goalkeeper to challenge him, making a return for De Gea unlikely.

Despite questions raised by Forest to De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, no concrete agreement was reached, as detailed by transfer expert Mike McGrath.

De Gea’s illustrious career at Manchester United, breaking records and winning titles, makes his current status as a free agent somewhat perplexing. Nevertheless, it’s anticipated he will find a new club in the upcoming summer transfer window.
