Gary O’Neil has expressed surprise at Nottingham Forest’s current position in the standings as he gears up to lead his Wolves side to face them at the City Ground this Saturday. Despite their previous 1-1 draw at Molineux in December, Nottingham Forest finds themselves in a precarious position, with only a narrow gap separating them from the relegation zone. 
O’Neil, hailing from Beckenham, finds it astonishing that Nottingham Forest is currently sitting in 17th place. He voiced his expectations for more from the Reds this season, especially considering the substantial investment from Evangelos Marinakis. Speaking in a press conference on Friday, O’Neil remarked on the depth of talent and financial resources at Nottingham Forest’s disposal, indicating his surprise at their underwhelming performance this season.
Nottingham Forest’s recruitment efforts during the summer seemed promising, with the addition of dynamic wingers like Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi, along with midfielder Ibrahim Sangare, who showcased his abilities at PSV Eindhoven before joining in a significant £30m deal. However, both Steve Cooper and Nuno have struggled to harness the potential of these new signings into a cohesive and consistently winning team. 
The looming threat of relegation poses significant challenges for Nottingham Forest, with the potential departure of key players like Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo, even if they manage to avoid the drop. Teams like Tottenham are already rumored to be interested in Gibbs-White, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Nottingham Forest’s future.
Should relegation occur, it would likely prompt another period of upheaval at the City Ground, with Marinakis likely to oversee significant changes in the squad during the upcoming summer transfer window.
