The Buffalo Bills have found themselves in a challenging position ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft following the trade of Stefon Diggs. With this move, it’s clear that the team’s priority is to select a wide receiver in the first round. Despite tempting options like LSU’s Brian Thomas Jr. or Texas’ Xavier Worthy, General Manager Brandon Beane must exercise caution.
While the loss of Diggs might prompt urgency in bolstering the receiving corps, the truth is that the Bills were likely already considering a wide receiver in the first round, given the current composition of their receiver room. This group lacks depth and may not inspire confidence in quarterback Josh Allen. 
Fortunately, this year’s draft class boasts a plethora of talented receivers. However, there are certain players the Bills should steer clear of. Brian Thomas Jr., despite his talent, shouldn’t be pursued aggressively. While he’s a standout receiver, trading up for him would likely require sacrificing valuable future draft picks, negating the benefits of the Diggs trade. Instead, the Bills should focus on maximizing their draft capital and targeting receivers like Oregon’s Troy Franklin or Florida State’s Keon Coleman, who offer similar potential.
Similarly, while Texas wideout Xavier Worthy is an exceptional athlete with impressive speed, his specialization as a deep threat doesn’t align with the Bills’ needs. Without Diggs, they require receivers who can excel across all aspects of the game, not just deep routes. Thus, pursuing players like Georgia’s Ladd McConkey or Michigan’s Roman Wilson, who offer more versatility, would be a smarter approach.
Furthermore, the Bills should resist the temptation to address other positions, particularly the defensive line, with their first pick. Despite the defensive-minded approach of head coach Sean McDermott, investing further in this area would be counterproductive. Instead, they should allow previous draft investments to develop and focus on immediate needs, primarily wide receiver.
In summary, the Bills’ priority in the draft should be selecting a wide receiver in the first round. While there may be tempting alternatives, it’s crucial for them to exercise restraint and make strategic decisions that align with their long-term goals.
