Sheffield Wednesday star explains unusual routine that surprised Danny Rohl

Josh Windass, who joined Sheffield Wednesday from Wigan Athletic in 2020 and has since become a key player for the team, recently shed light on his unique pre-match routine. Despite spending some time sidelined during the season, Windass has spoken highly of manager Danny Rohl, considering him the best manager he has ever worked with. Rohl, in turn, values Windass’s contributions, as the midfielder has scored four goals and provided one assist in his last eight games for the Owls.

Despite their strong relationship and contributions to the club, Rohl was surprised by Windass’s pre-match meal choice. Windass revealed to the Pitch Side YouTube channel that he typically eats a jam sandwich before games, following it with a meal of chicken, beans, and white rice. Rohl, unfamiliar with such a practice, expressed his surprise, stating that he had never encountered anyone else consuming a jam sandwich before a match.

While Windass’s pre-match meal may not be the strangest in football, it certainly stands out, especially in comparison to other players’ routines.

Former Sheffield Wednesday academy product Jamie Vardy once revealed his unusual pre-match routine, consisting of three Red Bulls, a double espresso, and a cheese and ham omelette, claiming it made him “run around like a nut-job” during matches. Other footballers have also shared their unique pre-game meals, such as Gareth Bale’s five slices of toast and beans, Paul Scholes’s two Turkish Delights and a cup of tea, Andy Carroll’s Yorkshire puddings and gravy, and Wayne Rooney’s combination of Coco Pops and a banana.

It’s often the case that top players have unconventional dietary habits, so perhaps Josh Windass’s preference for a jam sandwich before games isn’t so unusual after all.

Regardless of what Windass eats before matches, fans are likely more concerned with seeing him on the field than worrying about his dietary choices. Unfortunately, Windass has missed 15 games across all competitions this season due to injury, raising concerns about his fitness as Sheffield Wednesday enter a crucial stage in their battle against relegation.

As Sheffield Wednesday face a series of challenging matches ahead, having Windass back in the squad would undoubtedly be beneficial. However, it remains uncertain when he will return to action.
