DES Buckingham has honored the memory of Joey Beauchamp on the two-year anniversary of the Oxford United legend’s passing.
Beauchamp passed away at the age of 50 on February 19, 2022, with a coroner later determining that he had taken his own life.
Regarded as one of Oxford’s finest players, Beauchamp holds the tenth spot in the club’s appearances table and ranks fifth in the all-time goalscoring chart.
Born in Oxford, Beauchamp began his journey with United as a youth player in 1987. He quickly made a name for himself, attracting interest from top clubs before being signed by West Ham United for £1,000,000 in 1994. However, his stint with the Hammers lasted only 58 days, and after a brief spell at Swindon Town, he returned to Oxford to help the club secure promotion in 1996.
Reflecting on Beauchamp’s legacy, United head coach Buckingham remarked, “I don’t think anyone would disagree, he’s one of the best players, if not the best player, to have played in an Oxford United shirt. I was fortunate to watch him several times when I went up the Manor, as were others.”
While acknowledging the tragedy of Beauchamp’s passing, Buckingham emphasized the club’s efforts to honor his memory and the impact he had during his time at Oxford. Beauchamp’s contributions remain a significant part of the club’s history and are remembered with reverence.
