After enduring a challenging streak of just one win in eleven away matches and a lackluster display at Huddersfield Town midweek, I couldn’t have imagined facing another road trip just three days later.

Huddersfield Town v Sunderland - Sky Bet Championship

Yet, true to form, the fixture list has handed Sunderland another away fixture, this time to the West Midlands, to confront Tony Mowbray’s Birmingham City side.

There are various speculations regarding the decline in our away form this season, but one glaring observation is that while only two teams in the division have scored fewer goals away from home than us (Leicester City and Leeds United), there are only five teams with fewer goals conceded.

It’s puzzling, especially considering our reputation for playing attacking football and the fact that we netted three goals in three consecutive away games earlier this season.

Although our track record at St. Andrews isn’t stellar, with just one win in eight league matches this century, this Sunderland squad has a knack for bouncing back after tough outings, as we’ve seen following Wednesday’s match in West Yorkshire.

As Sunderland fans, we’re no strangers to rollercoaster seasons, but Birmingham City supporters are currently experiencing one that truly epitomizes the term.

Their journey began with a promising 6th place under John Eustace in mid-October, only to take a sharp turn when former England and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney took the helm. Rooney’s tenure at St. Andrews lasted a mere 83 days, during which the team plummeted to 20th in the table due to nine defeats in the 15 matches under his management.

Shortly after Rooney’s departure, Tony Mowbray stepped in, returning to the club after leaving the Stadium of Light just a month prior. Mowbray’s arrival has yielded mixed results, with two wins and two defeats in the five league games he’s overseen thus far.

Despite a disappointing loss at Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham bounced back with a crucial home victory against Blackburn Rovers midweek. This win not only boosted morale but also widened the gap to six points between them and the relegation zone.

Furthermore, their recent victory snapped a six-game winless streak on home turf, potentially making them a more formidable opponent for Sunderland this afternoon at St. Andrews.
