Jayson Tatum is aware of the critiques regarding the Boston Celtics’ toughness and recognizes that the team’s narrative can only be altered through winning a championship. To address this, the Celtics’ standout appeared on “CBS Mornings” on Tuesday, revealing his foundation’s collaboration with the SoFi Generational Wealth Fund. Their joint effort aims to donate more than $1 million to support low-income families, facilitate financial literacy education and enhance opportunities for home ownership.
However, the CBS team wasn’t going to let him off the hook without delving into a basketball-related inquiry. The co-hosts seized the opportunity to question Tatum about recent remarks made by Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, who asserted that the Celtics lack the mental fortitude required to secure a championship at present.
They posed the query to Tatum: Does Barkley have a valid point? Tatum, in response, chose to take the high road.
“I mean, you have to acknowledge the respect, right?” Tatum replied. “These are the individuals who paved the way for younger players like myself.”
Co-host Gayle King, who co-hosts a CNN program with Barkley, chimed in, anticipating a forthcoming caveat. “I sense a ‘but’ coming,” she interjected.
“You don’t always have to be in agreement,” Tatum continued with a chuckle. “But you have to, in a way, appreciate it due to the hard work they’ve invested. I comprehend that, given the times we’re in. You can’t claim a championship—no one can—until it’s actually achieved. So, until we accomplish that feat, no one will acknowledge our capability, and that’s perfectly acceptable.”
